Years ago, our love for spiders became a familial passion. Our youngest daughter at the time was 3 and she loved all things creepy and crawly. One day while doing laundry, a LARGE huntsman spider showed up. I grabbed a boot as I usually did when anything that big came indoors. I called the girls to see the spider before I dealt with him. They came running to see. They were shocked at his size! I approached with the boot and readied my aim… Our 3 year old yells out “No mom, don't kill him! He’s my family!” That one plea of mercy struck me and I could never kill my child's “family”. I set the boot down and grabbed a large glass and piece of mail. Confronting a lifelong phobia, I scooped up the spider and took him outside and watched my kids giggle as he crawled away.
Thus began a very uncomfortable transition from fear of spiders, to appreciation and admiration of the little things. We began rehousing spiders outside and even letting a few live indoors in their little window areas. This became a passion and brought our family together in a weird creepy way.
This new found love encouraged us to make our own habitats for our spider family members. We then began the creation of “My Spider Friend” to help make this family activity accessible to other families and to encourage healthy spider appreciation. Spiders play a vital role in our ecosystem, though are often killed and seen as pests simply because they look scary. That is why jumping spiders are the perfect starter spider to help build that appreciation. They are adorable, non-lethal and full of personality. We hope you and your family and friends experience first hand the wonder and amazement these small but fierce creatures have to offer.
