*Note: Our Live Oak leaves may still have some pigmentation or color when they first fall from the tree. They will all eventually turn brown and will replicate natural ground cover in your vivarium.
Leaf litter refers to a layer of dead leaves on the floor of the vivarium. Leaf litter provides visual barriers and places to hide for the vivarium inhabitants. Leaf litter also gradually breaks down, adding nutrients to the substrate, and sustaining healthy populations of microfauna, such as springtails and isopods, that not only provide a source of food for many vivarium inhabitants, but also aid in keeping the vivarium clean.
Leaf Litter performs a very important role in a naturalistic vivarium. It provides shelter, visual barriers, and hiding places for the vivarium's inhabitants. Leaf litter mimics the role of dead plant matter in the forest.  We sift all of our leaves to remove most of the acorns, sticks and grass.  We recommend heat treating the leaves prior to use in your vivarium.
